<p>Yeah, so February is supposed to be a fun month, at least for me. My birthday happened (Happy Birthday to me!). Valentine&rsquo;s day was very low-key due to the Plague. And then, we had the Polar Vortex come calling the day after Valentine&rsquo;s day.</p>
<p>I wrote a <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/02/well-that-was-fun/">bit about it</a> already, so I am not going to rehash that now.</p>
<p>I also wrote about <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/02/new-look-again/">upgrading my theme</a>.</p>
<p>Things are going well with the ${JOB}, so I cannot complain there.</p>
<p>I forgot to keep track of how many books I managed to read in my down-time, or the number of YouTube videos I watched. I suspect I will be pleasantly surprised about the first, and scared at the second.</p>

<p>So, it has been a while. Nothing major has happened, just busy with living. But, I am going to try something new for me and do some recaps of what I have been doing.</p>
<p>In January, nothing major happened. I survived an internal audit at work, and we have a break before we jump into another one.</p>
<p>In photography, I am still keeping up with my Project-52. This is the third(?) year now, so it is doing well. You can see it over at <a href="https://www.donaldharper.com">donaldharper.com</a>. I did tweak the code for that site and this one to run a bit faster by not requesting assets from another server.</p>
<p>Everybody around here is still doing okay. The kids are off doing school, and everybody is staying healthy. Cannot really ask for more than that right now. <em>grin</em></p>

<p>So, the CMS/static site generator I use, <a href="https://gohugo.io">Hugo</a> had a new release which normally is a good thing. But, this time it broke the theme I was using, so it is time for a new look.</p>
<p>This may or may not be the final look for the site for a while, as I still need to check some things out. I will look to make sure that there are no new edge cases with sharp edges.</p>
<p>I also have been looking at two other CMS/site generators. One is a true CMS and was written from scratch has a <a href="https://gohugo.io">Hugo</a> replacement, then other is a very fast and lean static generator. I would need to play with that one more to get a look I was happy with. More as I have time.</p>

<p>As if a global plague was not enough. No, we had to get snow in Houston. Not just snow, but over 48 hours with the outside temps below 0C/32F!</p>
<p>This is a &rsquo;time-lapse&rsquo; of the view out the front window this week:</p>

<p>We lost power for parts of it, just like most of the state due to the power generation stations going off-line. All sorts of fun. The kids got the week off due to the power issues, and I got a day off when we had no power.</p>
<p>I did putz around with some small projects on the computer when I could, but nothing worth showing yet. The wireguard network is starting to come together, however!</p>

<h1 class='entry-title'> Crash of the Firewall</h1>

<p>So, back to the end of 2016, <a href="https://netgate.com">Netgate</a> announced a small (think pack of playing cards size) ARM based firewall. I was in need of a new firewall, so I picked one up. This little guy runs <a href="https://pfSense.org">pfSense</a> which is a <a href="https://freebsd.org">FreeBSD</a> based firewall solution, and it ran very well for me with no issues for over 4 years.</p>
<p>Until the <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/02/well-that-was-fun/">Winter Storm of 2021</a>, that is. Now, I am not sure if something happened to it during the storm, or if the internal storage passed its write endurance. Either way, I knew it was not long for the world, so I started prepping for the replacement.</p>
<p>Since pfsens had worked well for me, I was planning on keeping it, but upgrade to some better hardware. I found a Qotom Q515G6-S05 Mini PC which has 6 Gigabit Ethernet Intel NICs powered by Intel Celeron 3865U. The extra ports meant I could easily carve out some networks for specific things like IoT things. But, it does not seem to be yet&hellip;</p>
<p>And then it failed this morning. Hard. No problem, I thought as I had already bought the new box, and even had loaded pfSense. What could go wrong?</p>
<p>pfSense would not boot once I had restored my config from the old box. Staring to get worried as I had kids trying to to do school work with no network, I grabbed an old box I had laying around with two NICS in it. This time, I could not even boot pfSense on it. I tried many different USB keys, and burning styles, but nothing work.</p>
<p>I ended up grabbing a Linux based firewall distro to use on the second box. So far, it is working pretty well. It has some nice features which are missing from pfSense, but one or two missing features which pfSense has. Over the next week or so, I will try to install it onto the Qotom box to see if I can get it going.</p>

<p>When I was here <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/03/crash-of-the-firewall/">last</a>, I was talking about how my trusty firewall appliance of many years had fallen over, and the challenges of trying to get <a href="https://www.pfsense.org">pfSense</a> working on the new hardware. I figured it was time for a quick updates.</p>
<p>This last weekend, I did cut over to the purpose-bought box for the firewall, but I have not as of yet put to use the extra ports for WiFi and DMZ use. I still have a bit of thinking to do on how I best want to set that up.</p>
<p>Whilst I am not pleased to find out the IPFire team&rsquo;s thoughts on <a href="https://blog.ipfire.org/post/why-not-wireguard">wireguard</a>, I respect their decision on their project. Given that I am currently running wireguard at home (I have not had a chance to test it outside yet due to the <a href="/tags/plague/">plague</a>) I was hoping they would support it. As if the fact I could not get pfSense booting was not reason enough, the pfSense project announced that they were dropping support for wireguard for the foreseeable future.</p>

<p>Wow. March has passed us already. It was a busy month for me. I attended some training, I <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/03/crash-of-the-firewall/">rebuilt</a> <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/03/firewall-saga-pt-ii/">my firewall</a>, I posted on my <a href="https://www.donaldharper.com">my photo blog</a>, I tweaked my theme, I cleared out my desk at the $JOB in preparation for a move.</p>
<h1 id="training">Training</h1>
<p>I attended my first external training class in a long time in March. I took &lsquo;Certified Scrum Master&rsquo; as a virtual course. The instructor did a good job presenting the information without if being a pure info dump, and he structured the class in an engaging way even if it was over Zoom. Now, I just need to go take the test&hellip;</p>
<h1 id="the-plague">The Plague</h1>
<p>On 19.March, I got my first does of anti-plague venom. This Friday, I get my booster shot. Unlike some in my fair state, I plan to keep wearing the mask and following all the sane safety protocols, but I do care about my family and the rest of my neighbors, even if they do not reciprocate the feelings.</p>
<h1 id="the-firewall">The Firewall</h1>

<p>Well, it has been a few weeks with the new firewall, and things seems to be going well with it. Speed is nice, and everything seems to be working out just fine which is nice after the hassles trying to get a new firewall up and running.</p>
<h1 id="photo-blog">Photo Blog</h1>
<p>I am 1/4 of the way through the 3rd year of my Project-52 posting a new photo every week. Most of the photos I have posted have been taken with my cell phone. Since March 2020, I have not gone anywhere very far from the house, and while I find things to take pictures of, I have not been motivated to crack out the main camera, so I guess the cell phone is now the main camera, leaving the <a href="/post/2014/06/rewards-for-hard-travel/">Olympus OM-D E-M5</a> as a backup.</p>
<h1 id="cleaning-the-desk">Cleaning the Desk</h1>
<p>No, I did not change jobs. It is the fact that my $COMPANY announced last year that we would be moving out of out our current building, and moving into a new building (new to us, not new to the world) around the end of Summer 2021. Well, it seems that the Powers That Be(tm) seem to think that we will not be going back to the office before we move, so they have us go in, socially distanced, and clean out our desks in preparation for the movers to come in in August. So, after 54 weeks, I went in to the office and packed up a box to bring home.</p>
<p>No commuting for me for a while, it seems!</p>

<p>So, the freeze here back in February ended up killing two rose bushes and the orange tree. We replaced one of the roses, and it is already blooming.</p>

<p>Whilst I am not a developer by profession, I do know how to do some scripting. Over the last two days, I have found some cool new (to me) projects (<a href="https://github.com/tj/git-extras">git-extras</a> and <a href="https://github.com/thevinter/styli.sh">styli.sh</a>) and found a few things which were either <a href="https://github.com/tj/git-extras/pull/928">broken</a> or that I thought could be <a href="https://github.com/thevinter/styli.sh/pull/1">done</a> <a href="https://github.com/thevinter/styli.sh/pull/6">better</a>. So, I submitted three pull-requests between the two repos. One has already been applied, one is in the review process with a bit of back and forth coaching on it, and the third I just opened.</p>
<p>I have also hopped into a couple discussions and issues offering suggestions or responding to testing requests.</p>
<p>All in all, a good way to spend a few minutes before bed and during lunch!</p>
<p><strong><em>Update: 2021-06-09</em> All the PRs have been accepted and merged into their respective main branches!</strong></p>

<p>July. More than half way through the year.</p>
<p>Well, it has been a bit since I have done one of these (like, back in <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/04/march-2021-check-in/">March</a>). I am not going to recap everything since then, just this month.</p>
<p>Based on the graph of traffic at the firewall:</p>

<p>it can be deduced that we took a mini-holiday. We rented a beach-house on Galveston Island south of Houston. It was the first family getaway in too long due to the Plague, school/work, and various health issues.</p>
<p>I got up early on the Saturday to try and get some sunrise photos. I got some, and a couple others. Most of my energy was with the family, so not too many other photos.</p>

<p>So, the month has been good for photography and family time. The $JOB has been a bit&hellip;challenging. Whilst I have had some time to do some &lsquo;real&rsquo; work (in this case, a bit of coding to automate a process) I got roped into the all-hands-on-deck-highest-priority project to upgrade the major applications clusters. Of course, the vendor has not tested the upgrade path they want us to follow, and random things have been breaking in new and odd ways. Oh, and through in the random server deciding it wanted to do its own thing, many long hours this week.</p>

<p>Fall is finally here. There should be no more days over 90F for the rest of the year. Well, hopefully not. As with normal in Fall, school is back in session.</p>
<p>Well, life has been a bit busy since my <a href="https://www.duckland.org/post/2021/07/july-2021-check-in/">last update</a> with things like family and home upkeep and work.</p>
<h1 id="work">Work</h1>
<p>Ah, Fall. Smell the internal audits in the air! Enough to make one want to puke. Somehow, I have become the Compliance Person for my team which means I get to heard the cats trying to collect responses to Auditor questions about how we sling the bits and what documentation we have on said bit-slinging processes.</p>
<p>If this was something I wanted to grow up and do, I would have taken some training in the fine art of reading governmental regulations. Ug. I am an engineer/architect, not a regulation wonk.</p>
<p>Oh, and ThePowersThatBe(tm) still want us to go in at least 2 days a week, but with the fact that Spawn #3 does not have the vaccine yet, I am not going in unless it is to pick up Spawn #1 from the dorms for the weekend. So, not very often.</p>
<h1 id="the-firewall">The Firewall</h1>
<p>In an never ending saga, the firewall is still working. My two biggest complaints are the fact the UI only works for me in Firefox (odd, but easy to deal with) and the fact that the key players behind the firewall distro do not want to support either of the two VPN solutions (<a href="https://www.tinc-vpn.org/">tinc</a> and <a href="https://www.wireguard.com/">WireGuard</a>) are crap and refuses to support them.</p>
<p>Given that attidue, I am going to be taking a spare box which has two NICs, and throwing down an distro I know and like, and changing that into my firewall. The second box is to make sure I know what I am doing before I subject the family to the new firewall.</p>
<h1 id="web-sites">Web Sites</h1>
<p>Last week, I made a major change to how I was hosting my websites. No, I did not change the software (<a href="https://gohugo.io/">hugo</a>), but rather how I was serving them out. I had been running a docker container with a small Go web server behind another docker container running a reverse proxy.</p>
<p>Whilst this set up was fast and easy to deal with, there were a couple of things I did not like. The first is that when I updated a site, I had to restart the docker container with web server to get it to pick up on the new files (all static content). The other is more of me not knowing docker well enough, but I did not feel comfortable running containers as root. This made scripting site updates harder/less secure, and I am sure my config was not the most secure.</p>
<p>So, I switched over to <a href="https://podman.io">Podman</a> to handle running the container without root privileges, and <a href="https://caddyserver.com">Caddy</a> for the webserver. This all runs as my userm, the server does not have to be restarted when I update the websites, and with only one container, it is using less resources as an added bonus!</p>
<h1 id="other-projects">Other Projects</h1>
<p>I have a few other things I am working on, or should be working on, but I have not found the time/motivation to work on. Sadly, photography is one of them. I am barely managing to post one photo a week, but recently they have not been super awesome (although, I do like <a href="https://www.donaldharper.com/posts/2021/10/15/">last weeks&rsquo;s</a>). I know that when my $JOB is really dragging me down, my photography suffers. I need to change that.</p>
